Anointing of the Sick
In suffering, you are not alone. The Heart of Jesus draws especially close.
The Church, following the command of Scripture—“Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the Church…” (James 5:14–15)—brings this sacrament to those in need of healing and strength.
Pope John Paul II teaches that suffering has a “particular power” to unite you to Christ (Salvifici Doloris). In this sacrament, your suffering is not meaningless—it becomes a place of encounter.
The oil placed upon you is the tenderness of God. The hands laid upon you are the presence of Christ. Grace is given—peace, strength, and the assurance that you are held in love.
Mother Adela Galindo, the Foundress of the Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary, says, “Only love gives meaning to suffering… it becomes a channel of redemption” (piercedhearts.org). United to the Heart of Jesus, suffering becomes fruitful.
Whether healing comes in body or in soul, Christ is near. He does not abandon you. He remains.
If you or a loved one is suffering, call the Church. Invite Christ into that moment. Let Him be your peace, your strength, your companion.
